Double Offset Vs Triple Offset Butterfly Valve

What Is Double Offset Butterfly Valve?

The double offset butterfly valve is a quarter-turn valve with a disc for controlling fluid flow. A lever attached to the rod rotates the disc, which opens or closes the valve when the lever is turned. When the disk is out of alignment with fluid flow, it means that fluid is not flowing through it. As a result, the flow can be controlled more precisely. These valves are used in a variety of industries, such as oil and gas, chemicals, and power generation, where high levels of control are required.

Advantages Of Double Offset Butterfly Valve

Compared to other valves, such as gate valves and ball valves, butterfly valves offer many advantages in industrial applications. Five benefits of double offset butterfly valves are discussed in this article:

  • Double offset butterfly valves have a lower operating torque than other valve types, which makes them easier to open and close.
  • A double offset butterfly valve has a higher flow capacity than other valve types, making them ideal for applications where a large volume of fluid needs to be processed.
  • Due to their shorter face-to-face dimensions, double offset butterfly valves are more compact and easier to install in confined spaces.
  • Despite only being partially open, double offset butterfly valves maintain a tight seal due to their flexible seat design.
  • A double offset butterfly valve can be installed horizontally or vertically, making it suitable for a wide variety of applications.

Disadvantages Of Double Offset Butterfly Valve
Double offset butterfly valves have many advantages, but they also have some disadvantages. These are five of the most significant disadvantages of this type of valve:

  • There can be a cost difference between them and other types of valves.
  • Maintenance and care are more involved with these valves than with others.
  • The operation of these valves can be more challenging than that of other types.
  • Leaks can occur more frequently with these valves than with other types.
  • There are times when double offset butterfly valves are less reliable than other types of valves.

What Is Triple Offset Butterfly Valve?

Valve applications requiring high-pressure and high temperature can benefit from the use of triple offset butterfly valves. Due to their triple sealing surfaces instead of two, triple offset butterfly valves provide a tight seal that can withstand high pressures. In high-temperature applications, for instance, these valves often provide a better seal than standard butterfly valves.

Although triple offset butterfly valve is more expensive than regular butterfly valves, they provide a tight seal under challenging conditions, so they are often worth the investment. A triple offset butterfly valve may be a good choice for high-pressure or high-temperature applications.

Advantages Of Triple Offset Butterfly Valve

In recent years, the triple offset butterfly valve has become increasingly popular. In comparison with other types of valves, this valve offers the following advantages:

  • There is a crucial advantage to triple offset butterfly valves: they seal metal-on-metal without friction. Furthermore, they can withstand temperature changes for a longer period.
  • In comparison to other valves, triple offset butterfly valves are much less likely to leak.
  • Their tight seal makes them ideal for applications requiring high levels of sealing.
  • Due to their variety of sizes and specifications, they can be used for a wide range of purposes.
  • Steam or high-temperature liquids, as well as high-corrosive or abrasive materials, can be handled by these valves. The oil and gas industry, pulp and paper industry, and power generation all use them.

Disadvantages Of Triple Offset Butterfly Valve

The triple offset butterfly valve (TOFV) is a type of butterfly valve designed to maintain a tight seal over extended periods. There are three offsets in the valve's construction: an offset in the disc, an offset in the body, and an offset in the seat. A TOFV can provide many benefits, but it also has some potential disadvantages. A TV may have the following five disadvantages:

  • Application limitations - Triple offset butterfly valves are not suitable for all applications. The oil and gas industry primarily uses them in critical applications that require tight seals.
  • Triple offset butterfly valves are more expensive than other valve types, such as ball valves. Due to their complexity, they are more expensive to manufacture.
  • Because of their complex design, triple offset butterfly valves require high maintenance.
  • Triple offset butterfly valves are susceptible to wear and tear because of their moving parts.

Double Offset Vs. Triple Offset Butterfly Valve

The choice between a double offset and a triple offset butterfly valve is one of the most important decisions when choosing a butterfly valve. Both valves have advantages and disadvantages, so understanding their critical differences is essential before choosing one.

A double eccentric butterfly valve differs from a triple eccentric butterfly valve in the following ways:

  • A double offset butterfly valve has more sealing than a triple offset butterfly valve. Due to the double offset design, a better seal is achieved between the disc and the seat.
  • Compared to double offset butterfly valves, triple offset butterfly valves have a lower operating torque. As a result of the triple offset design, there is less contact between the seat and the disc, resulting in a lower operating torque.
  • Triple offset butterfly valves leak more frequently than double offset butterfly valves. The double offset design provides better contact between the seat and disc, resulting in a better seal.
  • Water and other fluids are less likely to damage triple offset butterfly valves than double offset butterfly valves. The triple offset design provides less contact between the seat and disc, resulting in a more durable valve.
  • A triple offset butterfly valve costs more than a double offset butterfly valve. The triple offset design requires more precision manufacturing due to its complexity.
  • The body of a double offset butterfly valve is two pieces, while the body of a triple offset butterfly valve is three pieces.
